Villa-Lobos Etude 3 slurs practice in Micro Study 1a is a guitar lesson designed to help with playing slurs, in this case to help with Etude 3 by Villa-Lobos. These are extra lessons all part of the #villalobos12in12 challenge.<\/p>\n

Villa-Lobos Etude 3 Slurs<\/h2>\n

This is a short micro study which will help get closer to all those slurs, hammer-ons & pull-offs, in etude 3. It is a very small focused lesson which will get the study up and running a little faster, and improve your overall slur technique.<\/p>\n

Staying in one position will help focus your efforts on the slurs.<\/p>\n

The starter exercise: works the main fingers of the LH. Make sure that your slurred notes are as loud as the plucked notes. Start at a slow tempo to begin with.<\/p>\n

Below is the extension exercise which works all fingers. It is slightly more challenging as it works the middle fingers of the LH. Really focus on the second note of each slur, they need to be the same volume.<\/p>\n

Going Backwards<\/h3>\n

Forward & Reverse the Ideas

The ideas need to be reversed to gain the full benefit from them. Remember this is a pluck down technique. If slurring is still new check out the links at the bottom of the page for a refresher to the technique.<\/p>\n

Co-ordination of RH & LH
<\/strong><\/p>\n

The hands are co-ordinated in the exercises above. Get the slurs up and running first then concentrate on the co-ordination of the hands.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: This study uses the both hands, string crossing, and all fingers of the LH. So go slow if you haven’t learnt this scale fragment before<\/p>\n

Secret<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Speed not Force.
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Slurs sound best when played with fast LH strokes, not forced LH strokes. Make sure you are relaxed but poised with your strokes.<\/p>\n

And Remember: move the stroke from the big knuckles, not the joints!
