Universal Fingerings 2: Arpeggios

  • Arpeggio (RH Mechanism)
  • Diminished Arpeggios
  • LH Shifting (Deslizamiento)
  • Major/Dominant Arpeggios

This is the second half of my universal fingerings chart, the one I made for my students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. If you have not read the first post, start with Universal Fingerings 1: Scales. It explains what a universal fingering is and why I steer you away from the Segovia fingerings.

The short version: a universal fingering is one set of fingering choices that you learn once and then move to any key. You memorise one shape and shift it, which is what lets you call it up fast when you are under pressure, in an exam or in a performance.

The arpeggios on the chart

  • Two-octave arpeggios: major, minor, dominant 7th and diminished 7th, starting on strings 5 and 6.
  • Three-octave arpeggios: major, minor, dominant 7th and diminished 7th.

As with the scales, there is no TAB, and that is deliberate. Work from the fingerings written above the notes, keep an eye on the positions (the Roman numerals), and watch for where the shifts happen. They are usually signalled by the same finger turning up twice.
