Classical Guitar Master Micro Study 6

Classical Guitar Master Micro Study 6

Classical guitar master micro study 6 – RH string crossing & picado technique – is part of the #6stringinspiration series of short and sweet studies that target very specific ideas. These are for those who have very little time and want huge gains from tight focused practice ideas.

Guitar Master Micro Study  – RH String Crossing

This master micro study is one that will progress your scale technique, and string crossing ability no end. The aim to is to alternate fingers, one stroke per string, up and down the set – all six.  The difficulty lies when you increase the speed or change rhythmic patterns, but that’s a post for another day. For now focus on crossing strings.

String Order:

1 2 3 4 5 6 5 4 3 2 1

Finger Order:

i m   m a   i a

KEY Strategy

Move the Arm

The RH arm has to facilitate any string change. It does this by moving back or forward across the bout of the guitar. Thus keeping the RH mechanism stable and in place and all you need to do is “wiggle” your fingers! See the video above for a demonstration.

Other Info

Note: The guitar master study focuses on one hand in order for that area of technique to make gains.

Secret

Light & Aware

You need to be light with the RH arm, and in order for that to be achieved you need to be aware of it. So to begin with, focus on the string crossing: RH finger movement, but once that’s comfortable you need to focus on the arm too. Be aware of it moving at the effort it takes to do this. (Hint: this movement begins in your back, not the shoulder!)

Want More?

This master study is the culmination of the following micro studies, which are precursors for getting scale technique sorted. If you have not seen these already I suggest you begin with this first before this master micro study!

Want the Dots?

No music for this example, use the video above to walk through the exercise. However they will be forthcoming in a new classical guitar technique manual. If you want to be informed to when this will be published, join the CGRocks community below.

We are also slowly walking through Villa-Lobos’ awesome 12 etudes this year with the #villalobos12in12 challenge. Click this link for more info on that and to join in!
