Villa-Lobos Etude 10 Micro Study 1 – Slurs
Villa-Lobos Etude 10 Micro Study 1 is a guitar lesson designed to help with playing repeated slurs, in this case for Etude 10 by Villa-Lobos. These extra lessons are all part of the #villalobos12in12 challenge.
Villa-Lobos Etude 10 Slurs
This is a short micro study which will help get closer to all those repeated slurs in etude 10. It is a very small focused lesson which will utilize the main idea behind the slurred 2nd section, and it will improve your overall LH mechanism.
Notes:
Fixed Finger Slurs
This starter exercise for etude 10 works the weaker fingers of the LH. The stronger fingers hold down the melody, while the weaker fingers provide a constant slur underneath. Make sure that your there is even tone across the strings, one string is not louder or more prominent than another, especially the open strings.
KEY Strategy
Light Slurs
The LH needs to be light and only slur on top of the strings. Do not press in hard. The slur is still executed with the knuckles however with a little more writs rotation than is normal in classical guitar.

Note: The tone needs to even, so make sure that the open strings do not pop out of the texture.
Secret
Use the wrist
Slurring, in this example is with fixed fingers, so rotate the wrist a little bit to get the LH fingers plucking the strings. Lift off finger no. 1 on the end, do not pluck down, as this will help keep the tone even. This slurs here are almost like an electric guitarist would play them, more wrist than knuckle joint.
And Remember: keep your pressure light.
