Villa-Lobos Etude 7 Micro Study 1d Fast Scales

Villa-Lobos Etude 7 Micro Study 1d Fast Scales

Villa-Lobos Etude 7 scales in Micro Study 1d is a final guitar lesson designed to help with playing fast scales, in this case all the fast scales in Etude 7. These are part of the #villalobos12in12 challenge.

Villa-Lobos Fast Scales in Etude 7

This is a culmination lesson on how to practice the all of the 2 octaves scales at the first section of Villa-Lobos’ fantastic Etude No. 7. You will need to have checked out the first three lesson, which have the music and a break down on how to practice this final part:

Villa-Lobos Scales part 1

Villa-Lobos Scales part 2

Villa-Lobos Scales part 3

The aim here is: chunking the various fast scales sections into a long whole, to practice bigger speed bursts.

What speed?

Well that is up to you, push the scale (with a metronome) until it falls apart, then back off from that speed and work up to pushing past that wall.

The goals are to practice the stroke -rest or free – mechanism and control, as well as string crossing, which is the biggest hurdle to achieving speed in scale runs. And most importantly coordination.

KEY Strategies

Chunking

Here is where the real work begins: “I feel a need, a need for speed!” (A Top Gun quote is very appropriate here, so strap in and work these long bursts across the fretboard.)

If you have put in all the small scale bursts and broken rhythms practice before, it will not be too difficult to practice these fast scales in longer sections. You will now be playing the 3 sections together as one long chunk.

Small into large

First the break down exercises, outlined above, so small chunks, then once secure, secondly play the whole scale through a few times. Then put the scale sections together to form one long whole chunk.

Planting: make sure you are sequential planting the fingers as you play this exercise. The notes should have a staccato beat to them, you can hear that in the video above. This exercise is played in two ways: free stroke (like the video) and rest stroke. Aim for an even tone between the two.

The fingers can also be: m i, m a,  a i

Other Info

Note: This study uses the both hands, string crossing, and all fingers of the LH.

Secret

Relaxed conscious effort

Being aware of both hands, how much tension they are holding, is key to playing longer scale sections. So make sure you are relaxed, especially the RH.

And Remember: move the stroke from the big knuckles, not the joints and relax!
